Homework/Daily WorkHomework assignments and daily work provide needed practice and reinforcement.  Each assignment is designed with this purpose in mind.  Homework is due at the beginning of the period.  These assignments are reviewed at the beginning of the period or turned in; therefore they may not be completed at the beginning of the class period. Credit is not given for late work.

Caught’ya: Each class begins with a daily language review called a Caught’ya. Students copy two sentences each day from the board into their Caught’ya notebook.  Students use their editing skills to correct the mistakes in the sentences.  As a class, sentences are corrected. Students are responsible for correcting their mistakes.  After a period of two weeks, Caught’ya notebooks are collected and assessed.  Assessment is based on corrections.  Every student has the opportunity to make a perfect score.  As time passes, these sentences tell the modern-day tale of Romeo and Juliet. Caught’ya exercises address Alabama Course of Study Standards (WL.9- WL.10a).

Quizzes: Quizzes are announced a day or two in advance.  Reviewing assignments, listening in class, and preparing are the keys to success.

Tests:  Tests are always announced several days in advance.  There is a direct correlation between homework completion and test performance.  Completing homework assignments, listening in class, asking questions, and preparing are the keys to reaching your potential.

Essays:  Writing pieces are an integral part of any English class.  During the year, the class will conduct several writing workshops which focus on different areas of the writing process.  Because each step of the writing process is crucial, multiple assessments are given. Drafting usually counts for a daily grade. Revisions almost always count as a quiz grade. The final draft constitutes a test grade.  Most work is done in the classroom.  Writing samples will be taken from the literature class too.

Cheating

Honesty and integrity are hallmarks of high moral character.  Cheating in any form diminishes an individual’s high moral character. Cheating is the conscious choice dishonest; therefore cheating in any form will not be tolerated.  Cheating includes copying another student’s homework, sharing or using information during tests and quizzes to give an individual an advantage over others, and plagiarism.  Cheating will result in a zero.  An opportunity to retake the assessment will not be given.  This is not negotiable. An office referral will be made.

Responsibility is the key to your success!

1. Be prepared for class.☺

2. If you are unclear about an assignment, test, or project, ask questions before the due date.☺

3. When you miss class, get missed class and homework assignments from the board, homework page, or classmates. Missing school for a schedule appointment does not mean you are not responsible for the work. J

4. Turn in your work on time.J

5. Bring your homework planner to class, and write down the assignments.  I post each of your assignments on the board.☺

6. Stay organized.  If you need help getting or staying organized, ask for help.☺
