Special Opportunities
Up

Going over and beyond is encouraged within the walls of St Ignatius.  Students are provided special times to Shine and Share.  Some opportunities allow every one a chance to participate while others necessitate tryouts.

September is the month of the first over and beyond.  The national "Punt, Pass, and Kick" Contest is presented.  The skills of punting, passing, and kicking are taught through various activities.  Students in grades 3-8 have the chance to improve these skills.  Try-outs are not necessary.  For more information go to www.playfootball.com   Cross country is offered as an after school activity for students in grades five and six.  This is a wonderful opportunity to get a taste of cross country running.  It makes a great alternative to the regular fall sports.  Students in grades 7 and 8 are allowed to run for McGill- Toolen.

October is the month students in grades 3-5 learn about healthy hearts and the importance of choosing healthy life styles.  The unit concludes with Jump Rope for Heart.  Jump Rope for Heart is a program where students raise money for the American Heart Association.  The money goes to research and education. Students are given thank you gifts according to the amount of money raised. On the day of JFH students gather in the gym for 3 hours where they use the jump rope skills learned in class.  Everyone has a fun time running through school, jumping individually, participating in relays, while listening to rousing and inspiring music!  JFH is an opportunity for students to go "Over and Beyond" by helping others in need. To learn more about this program and the American Heart Association go to http://www.americanheart.org/jump

November provides students in grades 1-3 the chance to "Shine" for their parents.  Each grade has learned a routine demonstrating skills learned in dance, fitness, eye-hand coordination, eye/foot coordination, team work, and/ or tumbling.  This moving experience concludes with all students signing the "Our Father".  It is meant to not only give a taste of PE but to teach students that they too can share Gods word.
